The Hartley hooligans

Lola, Cal & Claire
April 2014

Cal was born in December of 1998 and was a typical, feisty boy until his sister, Claire came along when he was 2 1/2 years old.  Something about her birth and her life in general changed him. He grew up. He "got" things. He tried like hell to make sense of this new life we all faced, and most of all, he reminded us what really mattered most -- the precious moments we had with Claire NOW. This was very hard for the rest of us to see, but Cal seemed to always understand.
I remember feeling guilty that he couldn't just be a 2-year-old without a care in the world.  I wished that he didn't have to understand that there was this chance that his baby sister, Claire, might not live one year.  He used to ask us, "Mom, when is Jesus coming for Claire?"  I would cry & cry after he left the room because that just wasn't fair for my baby to have to worry about.  But the gift that came with this awareness was the gift of PRESENCE.  We all quickly figured out -- in part because of Cal's young wisdom -- that we would have a lifetime to grieve for Claire after she was gone, but we could  make a shitload of memories NOW which would sustain us down the road. We were bound & determined to MAKE THOSE MEMORIES. And have loads of fun in the process. Our outlook quickly shifted, and that is where it's remained for the past 10+ years.

Cal & Claire  ~  Spring 2002

It was in the winter of 2006 that Cal (then age 7) uplifted us once again.  We had just learned that Lola would be born with the same condition as Claire, and it literally knocked the wind out of us. I remember crying for a day or two straight, trying to make sense of WHY this was occurring a second time. Why couldn't Lola be born without a disability?  I remember Cal asking questions about Lola and her health. I could not assure him that she would be OK, but I told him that we just needed to pray for her. He said, "Mom, I just want to know her...no matter how long she's here."  I was never so proud in all my life.
Cal & Lola  ~  May 2006

Cal continues to amaze us in many ways.  He is a straight-A student, a drummer in the band/drumline, he has served in STUCO as VP in 7th grade & President in 8th & 9th grades, he is a phenomenal basketball player (his first steps were literally to toddle over to his Little Tikes goal and dunk the basketball!), and he is a good friend to all.  He is especially good with math, preferring to use his skillz for figuring sports statistics so he can dominate at Fantasy Basketball, Football & Baseball.  He has an extremely witty sense of humor, and I can honestly say that he makes us laugh EVERY. SINGLE. DAY!  He gives amazing hugs, and he loves his sisters & his family very much.  We are honored that Cal is our son.

FanDuel App Allows Easy Play On The Go

Fantasy sports in general have certainly evolved in the last few years. During the early stages, people had to play fantasy football and fantasy basketball by keeping their own score or sending selections in through the mail through some sort of prehistoric league. These days, it is certainly much easier to get a fantasy sports fix. There are numerous websites that offer standard season-long leagues, but FanDuel offers shorter, one day leagues for those who want to play fast, quick games on a nightly basis. The FanDuel App makes it easier than ever to get everything set up and ready to go.

Since players are signing up for just one day leagues, time is always limited. There are times in which people can’t get to a computer in order to set a roster full of players in time for the games to start. That is why the mobile app has been developed to allow a person to make all the changes they need. A person can sign up for a league and set the roster in a matter of minutes from any smart phone without having to sacrifice anything compared to the full website version.

Not only does FanDuel offer a platform to play with, but they also offer several links for people to check as far as statistics and match up numbers are concerned. This allows people to make an informed decision before randomly picking people out of the blue. Doing this all on the go can allow a person to even play in a league if they’re going to an actual game that night. It certainly beats having to find a computer with an Internet connection like people were forced to do less a decade ago.

Just like on the regular website, free games and paid games can be signed up for. This method of play is becoming more and more popular with those who play on FanDuel the most. Convenience is always going to win out, and that is probably why you do not see anyone these days mailing in fantasy basketball or fantasy football results like they did prior to the Internet taking off.

Fantasy Basketball

Fantasy basketball is near the last rung of exciting fantasy games. You would think all the excitement in the NBA should transcend into a great head-2-head fantasy league. It just doesn't seem to carry over well. Not that fantasy basketball is all bad. There's plenty of stats and players to support it, but it seems there is just something missing.

I once ran a fantasy basketball league called The Starting Five, which had a roster size of 10 and , yes, 5 starters. It was a head-2-head league that used the basic stat categories: PTS, REB, STL, AST, etc. I thought it was set up well but there was something missing. The league lacked a strategic approach to winning. It seemed you could just simply lock-in you best 5 players and run with it. Your chances of winning were almost the same if you just took auto pick in the draft and never made any changes to the starters.

I gave up on The Starting Five for a few years and joined public fantasy basketball leagues instead. I tried them all: head-2-head, rotisserie, and points style. I felt each of these had them same problem. There was just no strategy.

This year I'm hoping to revamp The Starting Five. I developed a simple and basic structure that I hope will make the league interresting. These are the key settings for the league:

League Size: 10-14

Scoring Type: Head-to-Head

Roster Positions: PG, G, PF, F, C, BN

Players Stat Categories: Free Throw Percentage (FT%), Points Scored (PTS), Total Rebounds (REB), Assists (AST), Steals (ST), Blocked Shots (BLK), Turnovers (TO)

Draft Type: Live Draft
Draft Time: Mon Oct 26 8:00pm EDT

Max Moves: No maximum
Max Trades: No maximum

Max Acquisitions per Week: 1

League ID#: 98337
League Name: THE STARTING 5
Password: fad5
Custom League URL: http://basketball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/league/thestartingfive

Hopefully things will start off on the right foot with a live online draft the night before the NBA season begins. Live drafts are fun and the timing is relevant.

I'm going with a roster size of 6 with the bench spot being the 6th man. With 10-14 teams in the league, this will leave the top NBA stars on managers teams. There will be plenty of familiarity on teams and also in the free agent pool.

It will go head-2head and stick with the basic stats that everyone can conjure.

The only restriction on moves will be the 1 acquisition per week setting. The idea hear is to allow managers to change players all they want but prevent a loop hole where you could change your team everyday and never have regular days off. I acquisition per week should still generate plenty of interactivity.

I included the league ID and Password above. The league is just-for-fun. No entry fee. If you read this and you are interested, please join.

Can You Win Big Money Playing Daily Fantasy Sports?

Playing daily fantasy sports can make you a lot of money if you are patient. Right now, with daily fantasy sports being quite a new concept, you need to look for sites offering overlays (tournaments where there is more prize money than entry fees). One of the daily fantasy sports sites regularly offering huge overlays is DraftKings.
You are probably not going to win big money playing daily fantasy sports all at once though…it takes solid regular returns to build your bankroll. There are people that make a great income playing daily fantasy sports full time or even part time.
There are some large tournaments that you can enter that will win you a top prize such as $1,000, $2,000 or even $15,000, but that is like saying if you play the lottery long enough you may win the jackpot as well. Draftkings and FanDuel regularly offer such large tourneys for each sports season. Players that make a lot of money at daily fantasy sports don’t usually make their income in tourneys with 5000 entrants though, because even if you have a great team, you still need to beat 4999 opponents.
The players that make a lot of money playing daily fantasy sports play smaller head to head games or small field games and scout the opposing talent to decide where the “fish” are. The premise is very similar to online poker. You can play a head to head tournament ranging from $2 to $500 a game, and in the end, playing head to head games are simple 50/50 odds – You either win, or you lose. Playing head to head, even if your team played average, you still have that 50% chance that your opponent’s team was worse.

Daily Fantasy Sports and Poker

What Is The Key To Winning Big Money?

The key to winning big money playing daily fantasy sports is knowledge. Right now, daily fantasy sports is still in its infancy and most fantasy sports players don’t even know it exists…and even less of the “general public” know about it. So having the advance knowledge of how the games work and which ones to play puts you ahead of the game in preparation for the boom. Once ads hit television and society in general knows the term “Daily Fantasy Sports”, people who have little sports knowledge will give it a try. This is the time to capitalize.

Daily Games Introduction - Part 1: What is FanDuel?

Writing for Footballguys.com...

I finally got the monkey off my back today and have my first article ever posted at Footballguys.  I am pretty excited that Joe Bryant and David Dodds have given me the title as "Lead Writer for Daily Fantasy Games" and trusted me to write on the best Fantasy Football website on the planet.  My article is posted below and can also be found directly at Footballguys here.

DAILY GAMES INTRODUCTION - PART 1: WHAT IS FANDUEL?

Over the past couple of seasons the daily fantasy games have taken the fantasy sports world by storm. As great as redraft and dynasty formats are when it comes to fantasy football, being stuck with the same team week in and week out can be frustrating at times. Injuries, suspensions, game plans, depth charts, and matchups can change so quickly in the NFL and having to submit a lineup for a redraft team you drafted in August gets tougher as the weeks go on. The fantasy draft itself is the one part of fantasy football that drives most people, and can be the most exciting part of the whole experience. With the daily fantasy games catching fire over the past few years, the trend is only going to continue to increase as fantasy players are looking for an opportunity to get their drafting fix on a week to week basis.

Daily Fantasy Games have several options when it comes to choosing what site to trust and deposit your money into (FanDuel, DraftStreet, Daily Joust, DraftDay, DraftKings, StarStreet, etc.), but I want to focus mainly on the one site that has a strong history and track record, which is FanDuel. In 2012 FanDuel paid out $50 million in daily fantasy sports prizes (up from $10 million in prizes for 2011), and had an average of 250,000 lineup entries per week into their daily games. FanDuel employs 40+ currently and is a US-based company in New York City and has an engineering staff located in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Leading up to the 2013 Fantasy football season I will take an in-depth look at the growing format of the Daily Fantasy Games with a six part series focusing on the daily site, FanDuel.

Advantages of Daily Fantasy Games (FanDuel)
  1. In most of your traditional fantasy football formats the season is over at week 16, but in the daily fantasy world Weeks 17, and the first 2 weeks of the NFL playoffs are all in play.
  2. There is a variety of options when it comes to choosing the price you want to play for, ranging from $1 to $535 per game.
  3. The game types also have a nice variety as you can play in head-to-head games, 50/50 games, 3-man, 5-man, 10-man, 20-man, or some of the bigger tournaments.
  4. Flexibility of times that games start. You can play the Thursday Night games, along with Sunday only, or if you miss out on the 1:00 pm kickoffs you can play in the late games. Lots of options when it comes to when you want to start.
  5. Customer service is outstanding as you can always find someone on the live chat to help you out if any problems arise.
  6. The feeling of having a brand new team each week, where you can play matchups to your advantage.
  7. It is fun and addicting. You will be surprised that on a weekly basis you will be more excited to follow your FanDuel lineup then your redraft/dynasty lineup.
  8. PayPal is accepted. Easy to deposit and withdrawal.
Disadvantages of Daily Fantasy Games (FanDuel)
  1. There is a rake that takes 10% off the top, which is more than understandable, but strong money management needs to be addressed when playing week in and week out.
  2. No flex spot option. Lineups consist of 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 PK, and 1 DEF.
  3. Beware of sharks. There are a lot of sharks out there when it comes to playing FanDuel on a weekly basis. These guys know the scoring system, lineup requirements, and every trick in the book when it comes to maximizing a lineup.
  4. Duplicate lineups. That's not to say that there are exactly the same lineups but usually on a weekly basis you will see 4-5 players on almost everyone’s lineup. With no flex option this is more relevant on FanDuel. On one hand, it might be a disadvantage but it also could be to your advantage as you will have an idea of who the popular picks will be. If you decide to go against the grain and their so called player misses, you will be sitting pretty.
  5. Kickers and defenses are extremely important in this type of format. In traditional redraft/dynasty leagues they can be an afterthought, but in a FanDuel lineup you need to hit on each position.
  6. Salary cap style of drafting. It is not the same thrill to draft a team that can be duplicated by others, and with no options for live drafting, things can become very completive.
  7. You cannot edit your lineups once the first game starts. So any later games you might have players for they are locked at the start of the early game. This makes it hard when it comes to creating lineups with guys that are Questionable for that week. It also can be viewed as an advantage as you can hope others are playing guys that are injured and won't start.
Be sure to take advantage of the fantastic bonus offers that Footballguys is offering for all new FanDuel members; if you deposit $20 on FanDuel you get a free subscription to Footballguys. For those that are already a member of FanDuel can get a free subscription to Footballguys if they Redeposit $100 at FanDuel. As an added bonus those that buy their Footballguys subscription via FanDuel will also be eligible for $35,000 ($70,000 total) in additional prize money in the 2013 Footballguys Subscriber Contest. Both of the above offers can be found here.

The Daily Tay's Best Week Ever

What a doozy of a week this has been. Sure we might be going to war with Syria, and yes tomorrow marks the 16th anniversary of Princess Diana's death, but what does any of that really even matter when we've still got a crazy Miley Cyrus roaming the streets of this good country free to corrupt our children? Two nights ago CNN transitioned from a story about Syria to bring us more information about Miley's VMA performance. We need to concentrate on the important news stories here my friends, like when did "little horns" come back in style and how come no one told me?
I've got a full purple caboodle back in Nebraska full of butterfly clips and tiny elastics just waiting for the day that horns and knots come back in style. And I think that day has come.
But enough about Cuban Pete, let's get into another edition of The Daily Tay's Best Week Ever.

First up, I've got to give a big shout out to this awesome reality show couple on the announcement of their soon-to-be baby girl.
Wait, this is real? A Jonas brother really has his own reality show? I guess I didn't realize they were still around. I'm sorry, I saw this headline and I kind of thought it was a joke. And it appears he's married to the daughter of a RHNJ lady? Am I right? If I had to guess I would say this is Lexi, Dina's daughter, all grown up? Well good for them! See, not all Disney stars are doomed for failure.
Speaking of doomed Disney stars, you wanna know who else is really having a good week right now? Sexual predators in Switzerland. Why you ask? Oh just because of the fact their largest city, Zurich, is now offering sex drive-in Mondays, which will be hosted in garage style rooms in the industrial side of the city. But don't worry, it's only on Mondays.
You know it's like taco Tuesday, only taco Monday... Around 30 to 40 women are expected to work at the site each night. Sex workers have to pay 5 Swiss francs per night to make use of the so-called "sex boxes" (because sex garages didn't quite have the same ring to it) but customers don't have to pay an entrance fee. Because nobody likes paying a cover fee, am I right or am I right? Hey, at least we live in a country where people still get all uptight about a foam finger.
Guess I might as well move on to that. Foam fingers are officially backkkkkk, and just in time for football season no less. Foam fingers haven't gotten this much air time since... well I don't think ever.
So thank you, Miley, for not only giving my friends on Facebook something to talk about as well as worried moms on internet forums everywhere, but more importantly thank you for boosting the sales of foam fingers around the nation, as well.
Speaking of sports, girls who pretend to love Fantasy Football also seem to be having a pretty  great week.  How do I know? Because it's all. they. talk. about. They tweet it, they Facebook it, they Instagram it. I understand that some girls truly love fantasy, like Sarah obviously, but I also understand that there's a large amount of you who just love it for the sake of proving you're a real "guys gal." But guess what? That's okay too! Any reason to pretend to like football is A-ok with me. You know why I love football? For the tailgating and the bloody marys. That's pretty much it. And there's nothing wrong with that.
And if anyone really owns this shirt we need to become friends asap. I'm also going to bet you owned a shirt when you were a kid that says "Dance Is A Sport Too!"
All in all guys, there is only one thing having the best week ever. And that's a three day weekend. Enjoy the lake, or grilling, or tailgating, or whatever it is you choose to do this weekend. At the very least be happy we still live in a country where the only thing we serve at drive-ins are burgers and french fries.... And on that note, lunch is calling my name.

obsessed.: Daily Dishonesty, fantasy football drafts and "Sowing Season"

Before we jump into today's post—I can't believe none of you called me on yesterday's mistake. I got the Revieu portion of the post ... but there was no Haiku! Colt realized it last night, so I added one in as soon as I could. What a goober, amirite?

Now, onto today's business.

I ran across Daily Dishonesty recently and just can't get enough. I love the cheeky humor of these illustrations, and some of them are so spot-on, it's scary.

The project is the brainchild (and the illustrations the creation of) graphic designer Lauren Hom, who does some really amazing work outside of Daily Dishonesty as well. (You can see more on her website.)

+++

And this week, from the Mister:

It's nearly that time of year, friends, when the leaves start changing, the air starts cooling (hahaha, wishful thinking), and the football fans once again start making their choices for the players who will lead them to a fantasy championship.

Last year, Colt took part in four leagues, and this year he's planning on taking part in three. ("Or four ..." he says. He's a bit of a nut for statistics.) Football season is one of Colt's favorite times of year, and the ability to "play along" as the teams go head to head makes it even better.

And from TGG:

Wes's interest in the band Brand New has grown over the years, from their first album, Your Favorite Weapon, which was pretty standard emo pop-punk with atypically clever lyrics, to their third album, The Devil and God are Raging Inside of Me, which was was the band's biggest musical change and Wes' favorite. The first song on the album can be heard below. (Note of warning from TGG: "This song starts out really quiet, but it kicks in loud at the minute mark.")

It's been four years since Brand New's last album, but their drummer mentioned recently that they're working on some new music, which Wes finds very exciting.

I was originally practicing the close range option of my Camera. Then i noticed this tiny little flower blazing above a grass. Not that much in naked eye, but once i captured it, its really good. This taught me a lesson. Nothing is useless or ignorant. You just have to look at it.

Fantasy Football Preview: Cleveland Browns

By Jon Lewin
Fantasy Football Expert
When it comes to season-long, weekly, or daily fantasy sports, you need to know how your team’s players stack up. After all, you do not want to get stuck with fantasy football players who will never amount to anything. Instead, you want fantasy football…

Daily Fantasy Sports Leagues – NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL (Football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey)

Fantasy sports leagues are awesome, but why should they only be a long-term commitment?
Well they’re not any more! How so? Daily fantasy sports contests are a newly created gaming system which allows you to play a full season in just a day!
Let’s now do a comparison of the daily contest style vs. the full season long league. As many of you are already playing in or familiar with the season long league, so let us start to familiarize you with the differences and the similarities of the two styles.
How do daily contests work? Read below:
  1. Select the sport you would like to play for the day. Such as football, baseball, basketball, hockey contest.
  2. Now you will select the entry amount $0.00 and up.
  3. Then you will select which players to build your fantasy team with in that day’s games.
  4. Now decide if you want to send an invite out to friend to play against or you can leave the contest open to play a site user. A site user will then build their team.
Let us look back at the 4 steps to compare these steps in a full season league. Read below:
  1. You would decide what sport to play a full season in. (Big commitment of time and energy.)
  2. You would have had to find out if your league is playing for an entry fee. If so, give the fee to the Commish of the league. (Now hope at the end of the season the money will be paid out as many times this is not a smooth process.)
  3. You need to find out when the draft date is. Block that day from your busy schedule and prepare before the draft and during the draft. (This is a key point to your season’s success; remember this is a multi-month commitment. You do not want to start the season with a poor draft.)
  4. You can not decide who you will play each time as that is already setup in the schedule for your league.
We just reviewed some differences in the two styles of play, daily vs. season long. So now lets view similar traits which they both share.
Here now are the similarities of the two styles, which are:
  1. You sit back and watch the games and cheer on your players.
  2. The winning team is the team with the highest total team points scored.
So far so good right! Pretty exciting stuff for any true fantasy sports fan to read. Now its time to cut to the chase on why Daily Fantasy Sports is the new revolutionary way to play! See below:
  1. Instead of waiting months to collect your payment or needing to hassle your friend or site opponent to collect the winnings in a full season of play, guess what? Well in daily fantasy contests the money is collected upfront and paid out to the winner. Simple.
  2. Since it is your money, you can decide when you want to withdrawal the money via PayPal or keep continue playing in other daily fantasy sports contests.
  3. The final point of separation between the two styles of fantasy play is you are able to pick when you want to play! (Hence daily contests.) No, four or 6 month commitment!
Thank you for taking time to learn about daily fantasy sports contests.

CBS Fantasy Baseball Rejects League – Fantasy Baseball Podcast

Aizer Bilboard
Just Aizer Being Aizer
I was lucky enough to be one of only 14 people to be invited to participate in this year’s CBS Fantasy Sports Baseball Today “Rejects League”.  So I just wanted to give a quick “plug” for the league and CBS (like it really needs it) and let those of you who are into fantasy baseball, or any fantasy sport for that matter, that these guys are worth your time.
This league is run through the Fantasy Baseball Today Podcast and its site writers who also have teams of their own in the league with the listeners.  I will tell you now that if you need any sort of fantasy baseball advice, these guys put on probably the best podcast and live show possible.
Baseball can be a boring sport for many to watch (not me).  But I know that it can be an extremely boring sport to TALK about.  It’s all about stats and numbers and that can put someone like Robin Williams to sleep.
But these guys make the podcast both informative and entertaining without putting you to sleep.  I think the dynamic of the different personalities helps keeping it light yet very helpful.  They also do a daily live video show at noon for those of you on lunch breaks that need to scratch the fantasy itch during the work day.
To keep updated on the podcasts leagues, check out podcast host Adam Aizer’s website, AdamAizer.com and check back here (and on Twitter) regularly for updates and virtual chest pounding as my team dominates throughout the year.

Creating a Lineup on DraftKings

Hi All,
As you’ve probably seen on twitter, I’ve gotten into Daily Fantasy sports recently and I’m doing pretty well. The biggest fantasy sport by far is Football, and the season starts in just over a week. Creating a Lineup on DraftKings
Discovering Daily Fantasy Sports like DraftKings is, well, exciting. You can see by their promotions that the money to be won this year playing is absolutely massive, and as someone who already loves fantasy, this seems right up your alley. However, once you enter a tournament and start the process of making a lineup, you may find that you don’t really know where to start. Unlike season-long fantasy, you can play whoever you want every week, which means the lineup combinations are endless. But by understanding a few simple concepts, making a lineup can actually be very simple, easy and fun.
The goal of this article is to show you how to make a lineup by letting you see a real DraftKings NFL lineup that I will use in week 1. I will explain the key concepts and reasoning that go into each pick. After reading this article, you should be ready to make your own lineup and already have a big edge on other players who may be playing on DraftKings for the first time.
DraftKings: Salary and Salary Cap

On almost every Daily Fantasy website, each player is assigned a salary and the website gives you a specific payroll that the total salary of all your players must fit under. On DraftKings, salaries can range from anywhere to $3000 (i.e. Tedd Ginn Jr.) to $10,000 or sometimes higher (i.e. Peyton Manning). Salaries vary from week to week, based on an algorithm DraftKings has created in order to price players fairly. However, their algorithm isn’t perfect. Some players will be drastically mispriced due to injury, matchup, or other factors. Our goal in creating a lineup is to find the best value out of all the players in the NFL and balance that with players we think will be the top performers of the week.

The Lineup:

QB Colin Kaepernick ($8000) – This is a play based on Matchup, Value, and Vegas.
Matchup
Kaepernick is going against a defense that was absolutely atrocious last year in the Cowboys, and they almost certainly have gotten worse with the losses of Demarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher in the off-season. Targeting star players who are facing bad defenses is essential in creating a top team.
Vegas
Sportsbooks (I use thegreek.com for lines) are projecting that the 49ers score 28 points against the Cowboys, one of the higher point projection totals you will see throughout the year. Sportsbook over/under lines and spreads are a big part of predicting big fantasy performances. Handicappers are very good at their jobs, so the lines in general are going to be very predictive of the actual outcomes of games. We want to use this to our advantage, so when the Sportsbooks say that the 49ers are going to have a great game, we believe them (Read more on why Vegas sports betting lines are so good here: http://dailyfantasywinners.com/vegas-trust/). Kaepernick is a massive part of the 49ers offense, so a good team performance almost certainly means a good performance from Kaep.
Value
Kaepernick is a high potential fantasy player for his ability to both run and pass. I expect him to be one of the highest scoring players week 1, and in order to win a big tournament like DraftKings Sunday Million, you will absolutely need to have the top scoring players of the week on your team. You save a couple thousand by using Kaepernick over Peyton Manning or Drew Brees, but he has as much potential as either of them.

Arian Foster ($7,200) – This pick is mostly due to an expected improvement this season, and matchup. There are many reasons a player’s salary may be lower than it should be. Foster had an injury-riddled, sub-par, season last year and consequently his price is significantly depressed week 1. But now he’s healthy and his backup Ben Tate is starting in Cleveland. This means Foster should get the majority of carries against the Redskins.
While the Redskins have made some improvements to their defense, they still will be a mediocre to poor defense this season. Vegas has the Texans scoring over 24 points week 1, and like Kaepernick, Foster should play a major role in the Texans offense. This is a great matchup for Foster.
